Sony Electronics has officially revived its original 1979 Walkman headphones, bringing the classic lightweight wired design back to the market as the new Sony MDR-3R with a modern USB-C upgrade.
The updated MDR-3R headphones connect directly via USB-C, allowing them to plug straight into contemporary devices that lack a traditional audio port. Alongside the digital connector, Sony has added an in-line microphone to the headphone cable to support voice calls and everyday playback controls.
The original lightweight headphones initially debuted in 1979 alongside the legendary Walkman portable media player. By replacing legacy analog wiring with a modern USB-C interface, the new release bridges classic audio nostalgia with current mobile connectivity standards.
Alongside the standard MDR-3R model, Sony will also launch a Stranger Things Edition at the same time. Full details on regional availability and pricing have yet to be disclosed.
